(May 2010) ““Cupboard Full of Life”

Mma Ramotswe fiance, Mr. JLB Matekoni, gets swayed into a parachute jump by Mma Potokwane which the thought of, terrorizes him.

Mma Ramotswe persuades one of the young mechanics to jump instead and take all the glory; and get all the girls!

Mma Potokwane arranges a surprise marriage ceremony on the big “jump” day for Mma Ramotswe and her fiance Mr. JLB Matekoni!

At last!! I have to admit that I am addicted to Alexander McCall Smith’s series: The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency!

The Kalahari Typing School for Men

Mma Makutsi decides to make some extra money and run a side business teaching men to type.

She falls hard for a handsome man & you get so excited for her…

But in the meantime, Mma Ramotswe must investigate a married women’s suspected cheating husband.

Yes! It is Mma Makutsi’s new boyfriend. Drats!

    (Apr. 2010) “Hello!

I am wishing to ask for some ladies to come on the radio show this coming Monday at 4pm to 5pm – May 3th for 102.7 Fm. To have a discussion of the importance supporting DEWC Writing/Bookclub group.

Also to set an example for other book clubs as well. DTES is known for learning ongoing and enjoy being in group settings as well with other members. And to address across the board as well the need of sharing our critical thinking.

I would like to get this out in the media and some poetry would be nice as well to implement within the radio program too.

    Thanks everyone.”

At first I thought I’d have nothing in common with the book’s contents, after all it’s in a foreign country, but as I read it I found that the main character was a very smart women!

Maybe I could learn from her!? Easy reading…Fortunately, someone in our book club bought the 2nd book and I enjoyed it even more!

Now I’ve been given the third book and I’m looking forward to it eagerly.

By the way, I saw an article in the paper about Botswana – I immediately thought of Mme Ramotswe.

Thanks for running our book club Amanda! Really appreciate it.

Can’t wait to see the movies!! Hint, hint.”

(Apr. 2010) “This is a very attractive book. These books are so good that I am not able to put it down. I just hope that the movie matches the book.

In the book, Mme Ramotswe is a cheer [sic] smart woman who achieved a detective business, as she took the courage to help the people in her town.

I’m looking forward to reading all the books in the series.”

  5. Amanda says:

(Apr. 2010) “*Very* mixed reviews from the group on this book.

Two members were so intrigued, they went out and got the rest of the series (and are reading their way through quickly).

Other members thought the author failed to present an authentic female voice — they didn’t buy it.

Once we’d finished the book (and fairly lengthy discussion) we watched the film (HBO, Starring Jill Scott).

Generally, we quite liked it. The music, colour, etcetera held our interest and we plan to watch more of the series.

Of the main character, group members said they found her inspiring — they wished they were as brave and as ballsy as her.

(I told them they were already both of those things. They didn’t/don’t believe me. A discussion about self-deprecation ensued.)

Of the film, group members thought it was a little sugar-coated; that it didn’t portray a true Botswana.

But as far as an escape from our own realities for an hour or so, it did the trick!”
